The Jaunt Trip #121
Destination: Camp Wandawega, Wisconsin, USA
Date: 4-8 February, 2026
About Anna Valdez
California-based artist Anna Valdez discovered her skill for art making on a trip far from home, an archeology excavation trip to Ireland. She was encouraged to keep a sketchbook during the trip, creating scale drawings and maps of the site. Through visual reinterpretations of these “abandoned sites” she explored the connection between anthropological and artist methods of cataloguing and record keeping. Working in mediums such as painting, drawing, printmaking, collage and digital media, Anna Valdez examines the relationship between material and cultural identity, using domestic objects such as plants, textiles, vessels and keepsakes as a method of storytelling.

Destination: Camp Wandawega
A few hours drive outside of Chicago, you will find Camp Wandawega, a unique place with a rich history. Originally built in 1925 at the height of the Prohibition Era, it was a safe haven for a cast of outlaws and criminals on the run along with interesting characters looking for liquor, prostitution and gambling. After its illicit adventures, the property was purchased by the Catholic Church and in the 1970’s it became a Latvian Church Camp for Catholic Latvians. In 2004 David and Tereasa, the current owners, purchased the grounds and they have been running Camp Wandawega since, providing a getaway from the city life and a return to other, simpler times. Back in 2020 we hosted a Jaunt Summer Camp here and now we are excited to return and enjoy the winter landscapes of Wandawega.
